NORMAN LINDSAY - EXHIBITION

31st January - 2nd March, 2014 The gallery will begin the new year with an exhibition of originals and etchings by Norman Lindsay in collaboration with Aarwun Gallery Canberra.  The exhibition will be opened by Robert Stephens, Director Aarwun Gallery at 6.30pm. Our wonderful woodfired pizza will be available from the cafe and music for the evening by Hayley Gallagher. Don’t forget to book so as not to miss out on a great evening. The gallery has a great line up of exhibitions and events in 2014.  We will keep you up to date on what is happening.

Another year is coming to an end.  Thank you to all our art lovers and supporters in 2013.  Many works have made there way to new homes with the latest being "On Thin Ice" by Glenn Hoyle which with much effort was loaded onto the ute.

"Gymea Lily" Tony Ameneiro

Tony is an artist-printmaker who uses both drawing and printmaking to develop and extend his ideas and images.  His work reveals a sense of condensed observation with references to art history and is executed with great attention to detail.  His most recent LILY HEAD series continues his interest in the Gymea Lily.  Exploring the literal and metaphorical possibilities of the botanical term "flowering head"

"FEATHERING THE NEST"

A wonderful collection of new works from Josephine Jagger-Manners in which she examines how both birds and people are alike in creating secure and pleasing homes, how they ‘nest’. Libby Oldham, Gallery Director says “I am pleased to be able to provide this opportunity to such a wonderful and inspiring artist. Her works sit well within our current stable as Josephine has her own style which has developed out of a strong past of being influenced by the European Masters.”

Josephine’s use of colour is always vibrant and reflects her lifestyle.  Josephine enjoys painting what she sees as snippets of country life and domesticity.

For Josephine at present spending time painting from her home, surrounded by her large and prolific garden, truly is for her “Feathering the nest”

The exhibition “Feathering the next” opens on Sunday September 22^nd, at 2pm.  Following the opening, there will be a scrumptious afternoon tea with Josephine a treat not to be missed. Bookings essential for the afternoon tea however all are welcome to the opening. See you on the day!

"WINTER WARMERS"

Opening 10am Friday 30th August, this month the gallery will be featuring works from artists Ian Grant, James Shand, Judy Whitlock, Lyn Winters, Jaq Davies, jeweller Sarah Whitlock, Colour City Creatives and sculptures by Hugh Oldham, Natalie Reid, Hui Selwood and Glenn Hoyle. A great collection covering all mediums from small intricate etchings to large flamboyant oils and beautifully crafted jewellery.  The exhibition will run until 15th September, 2013.

SPRING IS IN THE AIR

On Sunday 22nd September, an exhibition of new works from Josephine Jagger Manners in her exhibition "Feathering the Nest" will be opened by Joy Engelman.

Following the opening there will be a scrumptious afternoon tea.  Bookings essential $25 per person.

"CONGRATULATIONS"

Congratulations to Nina Machielse Hunt for her first prize in the landscape section at Araluen Art Gallery in Alice Springs.

Also artist Natalie Reid took out 2nd place in the Frost Fest exhibition for her "Cloud Trails" and Commended for her sculpture "Bird Trails".

Jaq Davies sculpture "Bird Watchers Dream" was Highly Commended and Glenn Hoyle with Commended for his sculpture "Four Poems".

"Whether the weather be fine, Or whether the weather be not, Whether the weather be cold, Or whether the weather be hot, We'll weather the weather Whatever the weather, Whether we like it or not!"

This poem from my childhood came to me last night as friends and art lovers alike gathered at the gallery for Joy's exhibition opening despite the cold wet night.  We were surrounded by the wonderful colour and warmth of Joy's works and wowed by their strength and light.  Brad Hammond opened the show and after we sat in the gallery for dinner with Joy surrounded by the works.

I recommend that if you missed the opening you come out to the gallery over the next few weeks to see for yourself these wonderful paintings.

 Joy Engelman is a very collectible leading senior

Australian artist with a well developed career in the arts spanning all of her

lifetime. Highly awarded in Australia for her works, Joy has also received

international recognition and many invitations overseas. Engelman's work was

purchased by the Dept of Climate Change in 2007 and the work is currently

displayed at Parliament House in the Corporate Rooms of the Prime

Minister's Office. We are pleased to be the regional NSW representatives for

Joy's artworks and invite you to contact us for further information.

Artists Statement:

My works aim, not for a European accepted sensibility but rather to unsettle

the viewer, to unnerve the post-colonial mind of us, the 'settlers' and invite

discussion of just 'what we are becoming'.

Mapping the organic patterns of the landscape together with an exploration of

the marks of civilisation, allows connections to develop, and be understood.

From agriculture to mining, waterways to cities, mankind is now locked in an

increasing race with nature. Taking precious and finite elements from the

natural world, we consume and dispose of these products by burying or

dumping them back into the same environment, an unsustainable practice.

Despite 'settling' in Australia, and declaring our 'superiority', we stand by and

cheer on the rape and pillage of the oldest and most sacred of landscapes. I

am continually amazed and concerned by the number of roads, fence lines,

cattle yards, dams, ploughed fields, mining infrastructures etc that lay on top

of the land. They appear as a layer of 'marks' that bear no regard or

connection to the organic abstract layer of the natural flow of the ancient

landscape beneath them. We continue to have 200 years on from settlement,

a perilous disregard and lack of understanding of how the Australian land

works. We continue to impose European practices on this fragile land.

Growing up and living on an orchard, I connected deeply with the earth.

Inspired by the way indigenous artists 'see', I too want to fly and map this

place - but my love of Australia, even as a 'whitey' is continually affronted as I

find I am out of step with a greedy blind culture with a voracious appetite. I

can only express my concern through my art.

I want to challenge the idea of 'peaceful settlement' and instead express the

feeling that we have 'fallen asleep' in a modern society and this 'sleep' is

perilous.

The Australian landscape is my 'home' and it both delights my senses and

saddens me. Quite often as I view the large gaping wounds on Mother Earth, I

get quite depressed. These works are my way of externalising these worries.

"TWISTED RIVER OPENING GOES ON INTO THE NIGHT"

The new cellar door for Twisted River was opened by Andrew Hopkins, General Manager at Cabonne.  We were lucky to also have our Mayor Ian Gosper and many friends and wine lovers join for the afternoon celebration.

This was followed by a fun night of music from the "Acoustic Trio", good wine and Jayes famous woodfired pizza.
